A Heart for God:  David.

David's kindness

Readings:  2Sam 9
Sermon:  Sun 8th November 2015

Setting the scene:

This section of David’s story reveals a period of expansion and conquest. The reason behind Israel’s success is quoted: “The Lord gave David victory wherever he went (2 Samuel 8:6,14)”. God is fulfilling His promise to bless David and build the nation of Israel.

After offering kindness to Mephibosheth, David continues by seeking to offer kindness to Hahun, King of the Ammonites (2 Samuel 10:1). Hahun advisers twist David’s offer resulting in war against the Ammonites and Arameans.  Israel’s defeat of the Ammonites and Arameans consolidates Israel’s pre-eminence in the region. The kings that had been vassals of the Arameans make peace with Israel and become subject to King David.

As the narrative continues we come to perhaps the most famous incident in David’s life – the unpleasant affair with Bathsheba.

Let’s begin by thinking about David’s kindness…

Ice-breaker:
What is the most surprising and undeserved present that you have received?
How did you feel when you received it?

Study:

Read 2 Samuel 9

A) Understanding David:

1) What is David’s motivation in showing kindness to Mephibosheth? (verses 1,3)

2) How do you explain Mephibosheth’s initial reaction when he sees King David? (verse 6)

3) Describe his reaction to David’s offer in verse 7 (see also verse 8).

4) What is the symbolism of the scene described in verse 11b? (see also verses 9-10)
5) Contrast the position of Mephibosheth at the beginning and at end of this chapter.

B) Learning from David

1) In what ways does David’s treatment of Mephibosheth foreshadow God’s treatment of us in Christ? List as many parallels as you can find.

2) In what ways ought God’s grace towards us change the way that we treat others / live our lives? Be as specific as possible!

C) Praying with David

Consider playing a song of thanksgiving and give time for a period of personal reflection and thanksgiving.

You may like to invite friends to compile a personal list of gratitude to God and invite friends to share as an aid to prayer.
