Sermon Date: May 27th
Sermon Reading: John 3:1-17

Ice breaker

What are the kind of things that you don’t understand but trust someone’s expertise? (E.g. doctors, rocket scientist, technology, etc.)

Can you remember anything from last Sunday's sermon that struck you?

Study

The Holy Trinity is very hard to understand, because there is no simple comparison with anything we can see on Earth. Sometimes we think of the Trinity as water that is ice, liquid and vapour. The same substance in three different forms. It helps us have an idea of how the God Head is, but it is not a good comparison because God is three persons, not three forms of the same person. The Father and the Son are the same being, but different persons. The Son isn’t the Holy Spirit manifested in a different way. He is One Being in Three persons. God is the creator of everything, infinitely more complex than what we are, we shouldn’t be surprised that it is hard to understand His essence.

Q1 - Do you find it hard to understand the Holy Trinity?

Q2 - Have you been able to accept in faith that you might not fully understand how the God Head actually is?

Please read Matthew 3:13-17

Q3 – How does God the Father speak about God the Son? What can we learn from this?

Please read John 14:16-17

Q4 - How does God the Son speak about God the Holy Spirit? What can we learn from this?

Please read 1 Corinthians 2:10-12
Q5 - What does God the Holy Spirit reveal to us? What can we learn from this?

Within the God Head there is a beautiful relationship, full of love and communication. One of the main characteristics of God is that He is relational, in himself and with His creation. We can learn from how the persons of the Trinity relate and who they speak highly of each other. We can see how Jesus exalted the Father and Holy Spirit, we can see how God Holy Spirit reveals to us who Jesus and the Father are. We can see how God Father loves and speaks highly of God Son and God Holy Spirit. We can learn how to relate to each other and we are invited into a relationship with this relational God. We are encouraged to join into this loving relationship!

Q6 - Have you ever thought about how the persons in the Trinity relate to each other? (This is really hard to understand because God is One being)

Q7 – What can we learn from the way in which we find that each person in the Trinity speaks of each other? Is there any practical application we can think about for our relationships?

Q8 – We are invited into a relationship with the God Head, do you feel you could go deeper in your relationship with God? How?

Please read John 3:5-8 (additional questions if you have time, please skip to action if you are running out of time)

Q9 - What does it mean to be “born of water and the Spirit” or “born again”?

Q10 - One of the things that God Holy Spirit does in our life is that He guide us. According to verse 8 it doesn’t seem to be such an easy thing to follow, it is like the wind but you cannot tell where it comes from. How do you feel that God Holy Spirit guides you?

Action

Be encouraged to relate to others as the persons in the God Head relate to each other. Speaking highly of each other, being humble and loving. Let us also be intentional in trying to go deeper in our relationship with God, He is an extremely relational Being and loves us to join in! We can be part of this loving relationship with an amazing God!

I encourage you to pray together:

“Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the [d]communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.” 2 Corinthians 13:11-14
